A few days ago I saw this link that was shared by one of the pages I like on Facebook, ‘Being a Geek’. The thumbnail contained a solitary image of a man kicking in midair, and the words: ‘Kung Fury: Official Movie’. The link took me to the movie, which is a Kickstarter funded movie spoof on the stereotypical 80’s action movie. After watching the theme song for the movie, “True Survivor” by David Hasselhoff, I knew this was something I had to check out. It’s a thirty minute short on YouTube, and I think I can say if it’s worth your time or not. That answer is pretty simple: “Have you watched 80’s action movies, and did you enjoy them?”.
Right from the beginning, this short movie makes it clear what it is. The first sequence of the movie consists of a Cop stopping some punk gang members with guns by the street, and asks “Do you have a permit for those?” A gang member with a skateboard answers with, “I got your permit right here”, puts his skateboard underneath the car and stomps down on it. The car flies away in the air. If you didn’t realize this wasn’t to be taken seriously before, you do now.
Laser Raptors, time travel initiated by a power glove, ‘Kung Fuhrer’, Thor, and Vikings equipped with machine guns are all in abundance here. Not to mention hilariously bad one liner’s, egregious product placement, and a fully animated segment that pays homage to the great animated TV shows of the 80’s (straight up He-Man practically). Lighting, sound, and even the film quality matches perfectly with the standards of action films of that decade- really just filling you with tons of nostalgia fueled hilarity. The soundtrack is completely spot on as well, filled with tons of songs featuring heavy power chord riffs and techno synth beats. Add this to the catchy theme son, “Lone Survivor”, and you have the quintessential tribute to 80’s action movies.
If you haven’t gathered yet, I really loved this short film. It’s completely worth your time if you love silly parodies, 80’s action movies, and hilariously bad one-liners. I can’t wait to see what the production team LaserUnicorns does next. Haha; I'm going to go listen to ,"Lone Survivor", 20 more times.
