So I don’t want to overwhelm everyone with a straight list of everything E3; I thought I would just give a brief summary of each Con, and what stuck out to me in this year’s E3- providing a heads up on some of the amazing titles we will be seeing in the next year and a half. Besides, Kody Spitz made an excellent play by play coverage of events you can find here: http://geekdomination.net/news/. Please check it out if you want some more details on the great games mentioned this year.
1st conference Bethesda:
Bethesda did an excellent job this year, especially considering this is their first E3 press conference they have ever had. Upcoming anticipated titles such as 'Doom', and 'Dishonered 2' had some great trailers; while 'Battlecry' looks extremely intriguing. Even if they didn't have the astounding gameplay reveal of 'Fallout 4', it would have been a decent con. As soon as they got to the 'Fallout 4' portion though, everyone went nuts. Dynamic face sculpting for character creation, customizable weapons and armor, full protagonist character speech, and then the huge moment where we found out that you can make your own settlements across the wasteland in Boston. Using junk you find along the way, you can make full houses, sheds, barriers, even defensive turret placements once you run electrical chords from generators. There is literally something for just about everyone in that game, and it looks incredible.
Amazing! For the relatively lack luster E3 conferences the last two years, this was practically night and day. Microsoft really seems to be heading into the right direction, in no small part due to the new head of Microsoft games: Phil Spencer. Whereas Sony doesn’t need to convince people to buy a PS4, as they have already had so many sold, Microsoft really did need to for the Xbox One. They accomplished this in spades this year, and I think we are going to be seeing a massive spike to their units sold this holiday.
It was...Ok. No one really wants to hear about Madden, and the focus on Madden's new "fascinating" app was just a waste of time. To top it off, the zombie that came out with Plants vs. Zombies 2 section was just plain awkward. I have no idea why they had that dude come out.. Fortunately, Battlefront looks amazing and it ended the conference well on a high note.
Good. Kind of an average for E3 this year. Pretty dcent games were shown, but that 'Just Dance' segment amounted to me banging my head against a wall. That new game 'For Honor' looks brilliant though.
'Last Guardian', 'Uncharted 4', and 'No Mans Sky'. They all look beautiful, but they weren't really my favorite things from the conference surprisingly. The announcement of the kickstarter for 'Shenmue 3' may have felt a bit out of place, but I think all of us just felt excited that the old PS classic is getting another chance again. Not only that, the new IP 'Horizon Zero Dawn' looks stunning and just plain mysterious in a very compelling way. Yet again a strong showing for Sony, but not quite at the ass kicking level of the last two years.
Plain boring to be honest. Yes; you get your 'Star Fox' and your 'Mario Maker', but there was really nothing else there unfortunately. No new trailers for their huge franchises, and the trailer for 'Fire Emblem: Fate' showed nothing new. I also still have no idea what the hell is going on in the 'Shin Megami cross Fire Emblem' game either, as that trailer shown made no sense.
7th Square Enix:
This conference was just sad. Awkward announcers, trailers from past conferences repeated, and just way too much talking with little gameplay shown. If not for 'Deus Ex', 'Kingdom Hearts 3', or 'Just Cause 3'; that entire conference would have been pointless.
Bests of show!!!
Most exciting Multiplayer game: Battlefront
Dice seems to have really nailed the look and feel of Star Wars, and I just can't wait to play this game to be honest.
Least Exciting Franchise Game: Madden16
Need I explain this one? Maybe I should just talk about the incredible mobile App...
Most Exciting Franchise Game: Fallout 4
Dear lord this game looks incredible. Whether you are a long time fan or not, I think this is going to be a game where anyone can get something great from it.
Most Exciting new exclusive IP: Horizon Zero Dawn
If Ygritte from Game of Thrones was put into a world set a thousand years after the collapse of humanity while fighting robot dinosaurs, I think it would look like this game..
Most Exciting Indie Game: Cuphead
This game looks straight-up cool. Set against a back drop of a 50's era cartoon, this game looks like an insane platformer spawned from the darkest recesses of Mickey Mouse's mind.
Best Conference: Mcrosoft
Both Bethesda and Sony had amazing conferences, but I think Microsoft really pulled it together this year. They convinced so many people that the Xbox One might just have some the best games this holiday, and I think they have secured quite a number of purchases from people later this year.
Best Game of Show: Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
I wanted to say 'Fallout 4' or 'Battlefront', but I just couldn't. Between the extra gameplay shown later in E3, the heartfelt introduction from Jeff Keely to the trailer, and the trailer itself; there is just something mesmerizing about this game. MGS5 is probably my most anticipated game for later this year, and whether for better or worse, this could be the great swan song in the Industry. He has a lot to deliver to the fans, but I think this game is more than just that. I think there is a lot he wants to deliver on himself: this feels personal.
Those are my final thoughts on E3. Again, I encourage you to check out Kody's breakdown I mentioned above- it will provide a lot of context for the things I mentioned here. We will also be having an in depth discussion later this weekend, and at some point you should see a link to the specific Podcast episode below. Please also let me know what you think as well, as I would love to hear everyone else's thoughts on what stuck out to them at E3 this year!
